FINN’S CATEGORIZATION
Institutional media are the electro - mechanical devices which act
as middle conditions between student and what he is to learn. An institutional
medium is simply a means of transmitting instruction. It serves as the channel
of instruction. What passes through the channel is the substance os
institution, A distinction can be made between traditional and more recently
developed media. Both types make vital contributions to the instructional
process. Models, mockups, graphic materials namely maps, graphs, charts,
diagrams, motion pictures, projected still pictures, opaque projection
materials and magnetic tapes, are called traditional media. Television which
can also make use of traditional media like demonstration with sides, models,
transparencies. And teaching machines including computerized assisted
instruction, form the new media.
CRETERIALS IN THE SELECTION OF MEDIA
1.
State
the behavioural objectives for the unit of instruction in a seaquence in which
they should be taught
2.
For
each objective identify the type of learning.
3.
Design
a media programe for each objective
4.
Prepare a summary
– of media options for a group of objectives
5.
Assign
the media in which the instruction will be effective

specifications for the preparation of instruction for various media procedure
FINN’S CATEGORIZATION
James D.Finn put forward Finn’s categorization believed that
one have to be a professional for providing quality education. This is because,
he viewed technology as
1.
Technology
is more than machines
2.
It
is a process and way of thinking
3.
It
frees man to have greater power to make choice than chances
MEDIA CLASSIFICATION
Use of medias in the classroom results in helping teacher to
arrange more effective environment for learning. An instructional medium is
simply a means of transmitting instruction. It serves as the channel of
instruction. All the instructional media can be classified by the following
schemes.
1.
Dale’s

2.
Projected
and no-projected aids
3.
Hardware and
software approach
4.
Low
technology and high technology medium
5.
Educational
media Taxonomy

Categorization
CHARACTERISTICS OF A PROFESSION
Characteristics
of a profession is given in the book
“professionalizing
Audio visual Field” in 1953. They are

statements of ethics
6. An organized body of intellectually
theory constantly expanding by research
He regarded sixth criterian as the
most important one. After examining status of Audio visual education in terms
of each criterian,
Finn found out it lacking in depth and
direction.
Finn focussed on the need of an appropriate theory of history
which applies to three problems faced by society.
a.
Problem
of knowledge
b.
Problem
of second industrial revolution
c.
Problem
of public philosophy
He viewed the negative and positive, unacceptable and
acceptable, inherent dangers &
challenges
Finn
summarized newer educational media can be applied at

instructional Tools
Devices which help teaching to continue his normal teaching
operation, charts, OHP, models, 3D aids, include in this category.
2.
Data
storage
Devices used for information storage
in the classroom for normal teaching operation. Video tape, cassettes include
in this category.
3. Behavioural control type instruction
Devices used for cater
the individual behavior and control the behavior of the students. Programmed
learning teaching device include in this catgory.

5.
Research
level
Devices used for research activities. Dialect recording, high
speed protography include in this category.
6.
Systems
level
Devices used to achieve precisely defined objectives.
Computer based learning include in this
category.
Finn briefly describe systems concept and noted it’s application in industry. Finn added a 7th
criterian that a profession must have ability to exercise it’s own visual
profession as,
1.
We
have to understand and live with accelerating technological chages in our own.
2.
We
must learn to master those changes and help integrate them into educational
process so that their benefits are useful and rewarding.
3.
We
cannot let the practical sociology of the situation to less control of the
movement.
4.
We
must lead an intellectually demanding professional life with the focus of
technology with which we daily work.
Adoption of multimedia
approach to the teaching-learning may prove useful. It makes education
interesting, purposeful and effective. It meets the needs of the learners. It
makes the learning highly individualized and self dependent. Multimedia approach
is capable of reducing the load and
tension for the teachers and also plays an important role in proper appealing
and spreading education to masses.
